It started with CAMS: Started in 1953 the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) brought together all the various motor sport sanctioning across the country into a single uniform organisation, in part to put Australia on a path where competitions would eventually be conducted under the same rules from region to region, and in part to pool resources to put them to better use more efficiently through a central organisation.
During 1958 the confederation became part of what is now the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the organisation which conducts the Formula 1 World Championship. CAMS-MA are the only FIA affiliate and representative organisation in Australia for competition motoring.
The first Australian Grand Prix of 1928 was long before CAMS was created, but the 1957 event was sanctioned by CAMS, who continued to do so each year through to the AGP's transition to be an FIA event and part of the F1 World Championship.
1960 would see CAMS award the title Australian Touring Car Champion for the first time, starting out based on a single annual event like the AGP did, but growing into a series of events for the 1969 season. Today it is the Supercars Championship, sanctioned by Motorsport Australia.
Becoming Motorsport Australia: While CAMS wholly-owned, or held shares in subsidiary businesses under different names, including shares at one point in what is now Supercars, from the start of 2020 the core CAMS operation adopted a new brand identity and trading name for the first time, becoming known as Motorsport Australia. Since 2020 the structure of Motorsport Australia has also been undergoing simplification with many of the subsidiary aspects being wound down.
The QRDA contribution: As part of the QRDA's work in motor sport, and as part of our MA affiliation, we maintain a presence on MA's Queensland State Council, and are available to all members of that council's Qld Motor Race & Speed Event Advisory Panel should they reach out for information and feedback.
