Floor Pan Sports Sedans

'New for 2027' planning information will be available here during the 2026 season

The QRDA as Queensland's Sports Sedans club works to grow the Motorsport Australia Queensland Floor Pan Sports Sedans Championship. Similar cars can also be found in the QTCC, Replica Tourers, Australian Trans-Am (circa 1970's based cars, not contemporary spaceframe TA2's) and SuperTT competitions. In many cases vehicles of this style of construction can compete in multiple categories including the Floor Pan Sports Sedans Championship.

Basics of Floor Pan construction Sports Sedans

The Sports Sedans regulations allow for and are well known for cars built up from a limited-production or full custom spaceframe chassis wrapped in silhouette bodies, but it is not mandatory to do this.

Sports Sedans can also be built from an original road car body. This is where Floor Pan construction rules come in.

Two Wheel Drive:

2WD Floor Pan Sports Sedans can be heavily-modified two-wheel drive production cars that utilise the standard factory sheet metal including roof, pillars, door sills and the majority of the cockpit floor section.

Four Wheel Drive:

4WD Floor Pan Sports Sedans are a four-wheel drive production car that utilises the standard factory sheet metal, plus the standard engine block configuration and cylinder head configuration. The standard factory sheet metal must be kept in the following areas: roof, pillars, door sills, floor section, and sub-frame assemblies which incorporate suspension mounting points and standard pickup points. There are some exceptions though, with specific provisions that wheel wells can be modified to provide clearance for wheel and tyre assemblies, drilling holes for the fitment of permitted accessories and components is allowed, as is the removal of unused standard brackets from the parts of the car that must remain original.

From there the Safety Cage can be as simple as the minimum MA standard, through to a full FIA International standard tower to tower structure.

Anti-lock braking systems, not permitted on the spaceframe cars, are allowed on a Floor Pan construction car when it is also an unmodified OEM system for that car.

Also allowed on a Floor Pan car under the same OEM provisions are Stability Control, Suspension Control, Damper Adjustment, Differential Adjustment Control, Ride Height Control, Rear Wing Adjustment, Automatic Gear Selection and Clutch Control.

It is best not to make presumptions as the full Sports Sedans technical regulations have evolved significantly since the 80's and 90's, and cars for this category need to conform to all the other Sports Sedans rules, but this should give an indication of the type of radical free-build touring car that can be built.
