Improved Production Cars
This group is for cars built up from formerly registered passenger cars, with limited modifications to improve performance and reliability in circuit racing. To be eligible, the makes and models used must be or have been mass-produced "Touring Cars" sold in Australia, homologated for the FIA's Group A, or be specially approved; while mass-produced sports cars are looked after by ProdSports.
There is a control-spec all-weather tyre for the group, available across multiple wheel and tyre sizes. For 2026 the category moves to the Bridgestone POTENZA RE-71RS.
While the permitted modifications have limits, this group allows for the creation of a significantly modified car, much more than Production Car racing allows. Those that take the permitted changes to the maximum have built the fastest all-weather tyre circuit race cars in the country.
From the rule book: Improved Production has been adopted by Motorsport Australia as a sporting-level touring car category. Motorsport Australia is ultimately responsible for the approval of the regulations or changes thereto, and responsible for publishing the regulations via the Motorsport Australia Manual and associated Bulletins as necessary. The Improved Production Racing Association of Australia (IPRA) is recognised by Motorsport Australia as the sole entity representing competitors in this category. The IPRA is the category representative group which is made up of a representative from each of the Motorsport Australia and IPRA-affiliated Improved Production state associations.
